Surge and Power Protection
|
Surge and power protection is a very important aspect of properly protecting your computer equipment from the damage of power irregularities. Many people buy an inexpensive multiple- outlet strip in an attempt to protect their computer against power over voltages and surges. Then, when a storm comes through, they often get their equipment blown out by a power surge through the modem, cable or power lines. Unfortunately, these computer users don't realize the inadequacy of this level of protection until their computer is damaged and "on the operating table".
It is very important to properly protect your computer against power surges. For laptops, our $25 Traveler surge protector is inexpensive and highly portable. For desktop computers, we offer many levels of surge protection to protect your computer. The basic model does have multiple outlets and protects only against electrical surges through the power lines. Higher end models also protect phone lines (for modem protection), and network and cable lines (from power surges along those lines as well). These models range in price from $19 up to $49, depending on the level of protection you require. Madison Computer Works also offers panel sized surge protectors to protect entire rooms and buildings from electrical surges. Usually, this level of surge protection is used in corporate and manufacturing environments.
Although surges and over-voltages can seriously damage to your computer and data, many people don't realize that undervoltages (mini-brown outs) can also damage their system. Undervoltages can destroy motherboards, hard drives, power supplies, etc., and a surge protector will not protect a computer system against undervoltages. The only protection against undervoltages and brown outs is an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). A UPS has a battery that provides power to your equipment when the wall power dips below the critical level necessary to maintain your system. Often, a UPS can supply power from 5 minutes to several hours, depending on how powerful a UPS unit you purchase. With a UPS, they also build in power surge protection as well, to protect against power over-voltages. Most file servers and mission-critical accounting computers should utilize a properly sized UPS. Prices start around $59 and go up from there, depending on how long you need power supplied to your computer equipment.
At Madison Computer Works, we offer products from APC, Eaton/Powerware, and Tripplite for all your power protection needs. From the smallest surge protectors, to building-size panels and UPSs, we can get you the level of protection you need.
