Firewall Security

With the advent of the Internet, a new breed of vandals and thieves evolved to prey upon users of the information highway. Using tools to scan for computers connected to the Internet, these hackers attempt to break through the nominal security provided by Microsoft's operating system and Web browser. Once they have broken through those inadequate barriers, they can use your computer for their own purposes. They can steal personal information, use your computer for illegal purposes, turn your computer into a spam server, and sabotage your computer or network.

In the battle against hackers, several technologies have evolved to combat and block their activities. The most common form of prevention against people hacking into your computer or network is a firewall. You might wonder what a firewall in computer terminology means. In construction, a firewall is a non-flammable wall that prevents fires from spreading throughout a building. When it comes to the Internet, the term firewall is more commonly used in reference to a piece of hardware or software that is designed to create a virtual barrier between your computer and others. For companies with a computer network, or for individuals with a permanent connection to the Internet (such as through DSL or cable), a firewall is crucial. Without a firewall, intruders would likely be able to destroy, tamper with, or gain access to the files on your computer.

Many computer users who access the Internet via a broadband router, may already be benefitting from a firewall. The router itself generally utilizes NAT, a simple form of hardware firewall. This can be further bolstered with a secondary line of defense in the form of a software firewall. Microsoft incorporates a basic firewall in the current version of their Windows XP operating system.

Don't just plug your computer directly into a cable modem or the telephone line without first making sure you have a proper firewall. At Madison Computer Works, we sell both hardware and software firewalls for your computer and network. To discuss your firewall security, call us or fill out our inquiry form and we will gladly talk with you about the right firewall products for your needs. When it comes to your important computer data, it truly is better to be safe than sorry. Let Madison Computer Works help make your Internet experience safe and enjoyable.
