Security - Anti-Virus
Viruses:Viruses are malicious self-propogating code designed to do a variety of nasty things to your own computer and/or others' without end-user permission, knowledge, or wishes. Viruses try to spread themselves through a variety of methods. Virus examples are: worms, trojans, backdoors, macros, etc. Viruses are often created by hackers who are out to prove themselves, people disgruntled with a particular company, thieves and criminals, vandals, etc. Anyone who browses the internet, receives emails, or shares files are at risk of a virus infection. Many people get infected by someone they know.
The best way to protect against a virus infection is by owning and installing a current antivirus (AV) program, and making sure that the virus definition files (VDF) are kept up-to-date. Many people renew their VDF subscriptions without updating their engine. One leading AV company sells people updated VDF files without providing a new engine, thus allowing Bugbear and a whole host of viruses onto their customers' computers. People bring systems into our service center every day thinking they're up-to-date, but their computers are actually virus infected.
Not all AV products are equal in their ability to detect new and undiagnosed viruses. The differences can be quite striking. The AV program, Norman Virus Control, uses a technology called SandBox that detects virus-like activity. It actually caught Mydoom(2nd) in the wild, before it was even categorized. Norman, besides being a higher level of protection than the two best selling AV products in America, doesn't slow down your computer or conflict with applications like those other two AV products are known to do. We feel Norman is the best antivirus product on the market today.
